Programs
At Calgary First Mennonite Church, we meet regularly on Sundays for worship, fellowship and Biblical instruction. We also meet in smaller groups throughout the week for service opportunities, Bible studies and social events.
We have a number of activities and programs for people of all ages and interests. Check out some of our options!
Sunday School
Sunday School for preschool to 101 years runs from September to June. Classes for the younger children focus on telling the stories of the Bible in creative and active ways, while teens and youth discuss how to apply the teachings of Jesus in today’s world. Adult classes explore a variety of topics throughout the year. Topics can range the study of a single book of the Bible, to family relationships, to a Christian response to current events. Everyone is invited to join a class on Sundays at 10:00 am.
Children’s Programs
As we all know, young, active children can get restless during a church service. To keep these active minds busy, First Mennonite has a nursery available, well stocked with toys to entertain those under 3 years old. For older children, we offer a Children’s Feature during the main service and we also provide crayons, weekly children’s bulletins, and colouring pages to keep them engaged.
Care Groups
Small groups are important in the life of First Mennonite Church. Care Groups are one of the ways we fellowship with one another in a small group setting to build relationships and cultivate fellowship. Care Groups consist of five or six families that meet every few weeks in the home of one of the participating families. We share a potluck meal, have short devotional, but mostly we just have a time of fun fellowship through games and conversation.
- C is for Caring, Comforting and Cooking for others,
- A is for Accepting, Appreciating and Assisting others,
- R is for Respecting, Reassuring and Reaching out to others, and
- E is for Encouraging, Enjoying and Exalting Christ in all that we do.
Care Groups provide a safe and comfortable setting to share challenges and celebrate life’s accomplishments, with fellow Christians.
If you would like to join a Care Group, contact Karen Janz.
Walking with the Bible
Walking with the Bible is a home Bible study group. Its purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of the Bible as it relates to everyday life. The group is currently small and is looking for more people to join. All ages are invited. Meetings usually fall on the second and fourth Monday of every month starting at 7:30 pm. A one to two hour Bible study is followed by fellowship and refreshments. For more information on meetings, contact Harv Wiehler.
Helping Hands Women in Mission – Discontinued
Helping Hands Women in Mission WAS an adult ladies group that met in the church on the second Tuesday of the month until they disbanded in 2019. Meetings consisted of a business discussion, devotional, and time of prayer followed by coffee and fellowship. By volunteering, fund raising, and prayer, the Women in Mission supported a number of organizations, including: Alberta Women in Mission, and Mennonite Women projects, Mennonite Institution of Learning, Camp Valaqua; and local organizations such as the Food Bank. In addition, they supported Mennonite Central Committee by making Health Kits, School Kits, and donations of funds.
