Programs

At Calgary First Mennonite Church, we meet regularly on Sundays for worship, fellowship and biblical instruction.  We also meet in smaller groups throughout the week for service opportunities, bible studies and social events.

We have a number of activities and programs for people of all ages and interests. Check out some of our options!

Sunday School

Sunday School for ages 3 to 101 runs from September to June. Classes for the younger children focus on telling the stories of the Bible in creative and active ways, while teens and youth discuss how to apply the teachings of Jesus in today's world. Adult classes explore a variety of topics throughout the year. Topics can range the study of a single book of the Bible, to family relationships, to a Christian response to current events. Everyone is invited to join a class on Sundays at 10:00 a.m.

Children's Church

As we all know, young, active children can get restive during a church service. To keep these active minds busy, First Mennonite has a nursery available, well stocked with toys to entertain those under 3 years old. For ages 3 to 7, we offer a Children's Feature during the main service, followed by dismissal to Children's Church. Children's Church runs in the education wing of the church concurrently with the main service. During their worship time, the children build a craft based on a Biblical theme.

Care Groups

Small groups are important in the life of First Mennonite Church. Care Groups are one of the ways we fellowship with one another in a small group setting. Care Groups consist of four to five families that meet every few weeks in the home of one of the participating families. We share a potluck meal, have short devotional, but mostly we just have a time of fun fellowship through games and conversation. If you would like to join a Care Group, contact Marv Thiessen or Karen Janz.

South Bible Study

The South Bible Study is a group of families that meet on Monday evenings for fellowship and a Bible study. Meetings take place in the homes of the participating families. Since most of the families live in the south part of the City of Calgary, most get-togethers are in the South.

Walking with the Bible

Walking with the Bible is a home Bible study group. Its purpose is to develop a deeper understanding of the Bible as it relates to everyday life. The group is currently small and is looking for more people to join. All ages are invited. Meetings usually fall on the second and fourth Monday of every month starting at 7:30 p.m. A one to two hour Bible study is followed by fellowship and refreshments. For more information on meetings, check the Events page, bulletin, or contact Jim Griffeth or Harv Wiehler.

Helping Hands Women in Mission

Helping Hands Women in Mission is an adult ladies group that meets in the church on the second Tuesday of the month (except July and August). Meetings consist of a business discussion, devotional, and time of prayer followed by coffee and fellowship. By volunteering, fund raising, and prayer, the Women in Mission support a number of organizations, including: Alberta Women in Mission and Mennonite Women projects, Mennonite Institution of Learning, Camp Valaqua, and local organizations such as the Food Bank. In addition, they support Mennonite Central Committee by making refugee kits, baby bundles, school kits, and donations of funds. For more information, contact Erika Janz.

Youth

The youth group consists of young people between the grades of seven and twelve. They meet weekly for Bible study, reflection, and fun. Much emphasis is put on serving others. To this end, many youth events involve volunteering at places such as the Mustard Seed, Inter-Faith Food Bank, and highway clean up. Each summer a special week long service project is undertaken. It usually involves travel to such places as Mexico, California, or another Canadian province.

Adult Fun Volleyball

Bump, set, smash! That's how we'd like our volleyball games to go, although it's not very often that they do. But we do have fun! Adults of any athletic ability are invited to join us for an evening of recreational volleyball at Menno Simons Christian School. We make teams from whoever shows up, and we don't keep score. We usually meet at 7:30 on Friday evenings, but occassionally the schedule changes. Check the Events page or the bulletin for the latest times.

MCC Thrift Store

MCC Thrift Shop in Calgary (2946 - 32nd Street NE) is always looking for volunteers. Sign up on the calendar in the church foyer for one of our church's designated work days.

Sandwiches for the Drop-In Centre

On the last Sunday of every month, we provide sandwiches for the Calgary Drop-In Centre. Volunteers are needed to prepare the sandwiches. It's very simple. On Saturday night, buy a loaf of bread or two. Make sandwiches from the loaves, put the sandwiches back into the original loaf bag, and bring them to the church on Sunday. One of our volunteers will bring all the sandwiches to the Drop-In Centre after coffee and squares are served in the church basement. Since some Sundays the Drop-In Centre receives more sandwiches than they can use in a day, they ask that we make sandwiches from ingredients that can be frozen. The frozen sandwiches are thawed later in the week and then served to those in need.
